Old porch houses on the Big Blue

Beatrice grew up along the Big Blue River, and its older neighborhoods show it: two-story frame houses with deep porches, brick foursquares and small cottages on brick-curbed streets. The Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020–2024 estimates) counts about 6,000 housing units in Beatrice, and roughly 1,945 of them were built before 1940. That is close to a third of the town.

An older house is a fine place for a standby generator. It just takes a closer look before anything gets installed. We open the main panel, note the service size and check how the circuits are laid out. Some older Beatrice homes have had their electrical updated more than once, so we sort out what feeds what before we place the transfer switch.

City power from the Board of Public Works

Beatrice runs its own electric utility. The city's Board of Public Works bills electric, water, sewer and garbage service from City Hall at 400 Ella Street, and its own electric crews handle the lines. When a storm hits, they are the people restoring your power, not LES.

Short outages happen here too. On May 19, 2025, lightning damaged equipment at the city substation at 3rd and Grant Streets and knocked out a distribution feeder just before 1 a.m. News Channel Nebraska reported that 764 customers lost power. Most were back by about 2:10 a.m. and the rest by 3:01 a.m. A standby generator would have started within seconds and handed the house back to city power on its own once the line came back.

Same switch, any utility

The transfer switch doesn't care whose line it watches. It works the same on Board of Public Works power as on LES power in Lincoln.

Gas in town, propane in the country

Black Hills Energy is the natural gas supplier for Beatrice; the town is listed in the company's Nebraska gas tariff on file with the Public Service Commission. About 58% of occupied Beatrice homes heat with utility gas and about 39% with electricity, per the same Census survey. A house on the gas line can run its generator from the meter. Farmhouses and acreages around Gage County usually run theirs on a propane tank, and we size the tank feed along with the unit.

Getting to Beatrice

We leave Lincoln on US-77 and are in Beatrice in about 45 minutes, so installs and yearly maintenance visits are booked like any other job. For a unit that won't start, call early in the day and we'll tell you honestly how soon we can be there.

FAQ·Quick answers

What homeowners here ask first

Short answers. Call if your setup is the odd one out.

01Do you really drive down to Beatrice?

Yes. Beatrice is about 43 road miles from Lincoln, straight south on US-77, so it's a normal day trip for us. We try to group Beatrice visits so the drive doesn't slow anyone down.

02My house is on Beatrice Board of Public Works power. Does that change anything?

Not for the generator itself. The automatic transfer switch watches whatever utility feed comes into your panel, so it works the same on a Board of Public Works line as it does on LES power in Lincoln.

03Can my generator run on natural gas in Beatrice?

Usually, yes. Black Hills Energy supplies natural gas in Beatrice, and a home already on a gas meter can feed a standby unit from that line. We check the meter and the run to the pad on the site visit. Homes outside the gas lines use propane instead.

04My Beatrice house is close to 100 years old. Can it still get a standby generator?

Yes. Older houses just need a closer look first. We check the main panel, the service size and the old wiring before we recommend a transfer switch, and we tell you up front if the panel needs work.

05Will you service a generator somebody else put in?

Yes. We repair and maintain standby generators no matter who installed them. Tell us the model and what it's doing when you call.
