A new standby system

01

Standby generator, installed

$8,000to$16,000

Generator, system equipment, materials and installation

Generac · checked Nov 2026 · national

Generac's installation guide says installed home standby systems average $8,000 to $16,000, including the generator itself. It says pricing varies with the complexity of the installation and your location, and that the closer the generator sits to your natural gas line and electric meter, the less the installation costs.

What moves a Lincoln quote

  • Generator size. A 10 kW unit and a 26 kW unit are very different prices. See generator sizing.
  • The transfer switch. Whole-house switches, smaller essentials panels and load managers all price differently.
  • The gas run. A short run from the Black Hills Energy meter costs less than a long one. Propane homes may need a larger tank or new line.
  • Where the unit sits. Distance to the meters, the path for the gas line and wiring, and how much ground prep the pad needs.
  • The panel. An older or full panel may need work before a switch can go in.
